Q: What does “pp” mean?

pp is printed pages. It counts every printed side, not every sheet. One sheet has a front and a back, so it's 2pp. A 16pp booklet is 8 sheets' worth of sides, folded and bound.

Q: Saddle stitched, perfect bound or wiro?

Saddle stitched (stapled) for slim and quick: the cheapest. Wiro when it needs to lie flat: workbooks, manuals, recipes. Perfect bound (PUR) for a square spine and a premium finish, from 32pp.

Page counts, explained

What “pp” means.

pp is printed pages: every printed side counts, not every sheet. One sheet of paper has a front and a back, so it's 2pp.

Booklets are printed on bigger sheets folded in half, and every folded sheet gives you 4 pages. So your page count is always a multiple of 4: 8, 12, 16, 20 and up. 10pp or 14pp won't fold.

Short of a multiple of 4?Add a notes page, a contents page or a full-bleed image. It always looks intentional.

Six things to get right.

One PDF, in order

Send a single PDF with the pages in running order, front cover to back. No printer spreads or imposition: we do that. PDF/X-1a is ideal; standard PDF, PNG and JPEG are fine too.

Page count

Always a multiple of 4, and it has to match the pages you pick above. Your PDF page count is the pp count.

Bleed

Nice to have, not a must. If your background runs to the edge, add 3mm all round. No bleed? Send it anyway and we'll work with it.

Safe area

Keep text, page numbers and logos at least 3mm inside the trim, a bit more on the binding edge for wiro and perfect bound.

Resolution

300dpi at printed size. Use original images: screenshots and WhatsApp forwards look soft on paper. Designing in Canva? Download as PDF Print.

The spine

Perfect bound covers are one wraparound piece: front, spine, back. The spine width depends on pages and paper. Not sure? Keep it plain or one solid colour, and nothing gets lost.

Why does the page count have to be a multiple of 4?

How big is A4?

How do I supply artwork for a saddle stitched or wiro booklet?

One PDF, single pages in running order: front cover, inside front, page 3, page 4 and so on, ending inside back, then back cover. No spreads.

How do I supply artwork for a perfect bound book?

One PDF: the cover as a single wraparound piece (front, spine, back), then the inside pages in order from inside front to inside back.

Do I need bleed?

If you've got it, great: 3mm all round. If you haven't, send it anyway and we'll work with what you've got. Keep text 3mm inside the trim either way.

What resolution should my images be?

300dpi at printed size. Use the original files, not screenshots or images forwarded on WhatsApp. A person checks every file and flags anything soft before it prints.

What's the spine width?

It depends on your page count and paper: more pages and heavier paper make a thicker spine. Saddle stitched booklets don't have a flat spine, so it only matters for perfect bound and wiro covers.

Is there VAT on booklets?

No. Printed booklets and brochures are zero-rated in the UK, so the price you see is the price you pay. Delivery is charged separately.

When will I get my booklets?

Order by 3pm, Monday to Friday, and they're printed and bound the same day. Then:

A4 or A5: which is better for a brochure?

A4 when the pages need to work hard: big photos, tables, floor plans, anything read at a desk. A5 when it needs to travel: programmes, menus, handouts. Same binding options, both on this page.

Can I print a double-page spread across A4 pages?

Yes. Design it as two single pages that line up, and keep text away from the fold. On wiro and perfect bound, leave a little extra room on the binding edge so nothing disappears into the spine.

Can I see a proof first?

A person checks every file before it prints and gets in touch if anything looks off. Want to see it printed first? Say so in your order notes and we'll talk you through a proof.
