Booklet FAQs β€” Rapid Print Pro
Booklets & Brochures

Got questions?
We've got answers.

Everything you need to know about ordering booklets β€” from page counts to artwork, spine widths to delivery.

πŸ“„ Page counts & terminology

pp stands for Printed Pages β€” and it counts each printed side, not each sheet of paper.

Think of a standard A4 piece of paper. It has two sides β€” a front and a back. Even though it's one sheet (one leaf), it gives you 2pp, because both sides get printed.

πŸ“„ 1 sheet of paper = 1 leaf = 2pp

So when you see "16pp booklet", that's 16 printed sides β€” which is 8 sheets of paper folded and stapled together. A 32pp booklet is 16 sheets, and so on.

All our booklet page counts are in pp β€” just make sure your artwork matches!

Booklets are printed on large sheets that get folded down. Each folded sheet gives you 4 pages (front-left, front-right, back-left, back-right). So your total page count always has to be divisible by 4.

8pp, 12pp, 16pp, 20pp... all fine. 10pp or 14pp? Not possible β€” you'd end up with blank pages that don't belong anywhere.

πŸ’‘ If your content doesn't hit a multiple of 4, add a blank notes page or contents page to pad it out neatly.
🎨 Supplying your artwork

Saddle stitched brochures need to be supplied in multiples of 4pp. Here's why: each section is printed on one large sheet β€” think A4 landscape folded in half. That single fold gives you 4 pages (front-left, front-right, back-left, back-right). Sections are then gathered and stapled together to build up your page count β€” 8pp, 12pp, 16pp and so on β€” giving you that satisfying flick-through booklet.

πŸ“„ 1 large sheet folded in half = 4pp. Every saddle stitched booklet is a multiple of 4.

Supply a single PDF in running order, page by page from front to back:

Front Cover β†’ Inside Front β†’ pp3 β†’ pp4 β†’ pp5 β†’ Inside Back β†’ Back Cover

Front cover first, back cover last. No printer spreads, no impositions β€” just straight sequential pages and we'll handle the rest.

βœ… Preferred format: PDF/X-1a. We also accept standard PDF, PNG and JPEG β€” our artwork team checks every file before it goes to print.

Send us a single PDF with all pages in running order, starting from the front cover and ending with the back cover. For perfect binding, your cover is one wraparound piece β€” front cover, spine, then back cover β€” followed by all your internal pages in sequence.

The correct order looks like this:

Front Cover (pp1) β†’ Spine β†’ Back Cover β†’ Inside Front (pp2) β†’ pp3 β†’ pp4 β†’ pp5 β†’ pp6 β†’ Inside Back

One PDF, all pages in order. Don't send us separate files for each page if you can help it β€” and make sure your spine panel is the correct width for your page count (check the spine width FAQ below).

βœ… Preferred format: PDF/X-1a. We also accept standard PDF, PNG and JPEG β€” our artwork team checks every file before it goes to print.

Bleed is great when you've got it β€” we'll happily use it. But if your artwork doesn't have bleed, don't worry about it. Send it as-is and we'll work with what you've got.

If you do want to add bleed, extend your background or edge elements 3mm beyond the page edge on all sides. Keep all important text and content at least 3mm inside the trim edge.

🩸 Got bleed? Great. Haven't got bleed? Also fine. We're not precious about it.

Aim for 300dpi at print size. This is what gives you sharp, crisp results.

If you're designing in Canva, export at "Print" quality (300dpi). Don't use screenshots or images forwarded from WhatsApp β€” they compress heavily and will look soft or pixelated when printed.

πŸ“Έ When in doubt, use the original file β€” not a screenshot of it.

Our artwork team checks every file before print. If something looks off, we'll flag it and give you a chance to fix it before we run anything.

πŸ“ Spine width & binding

The spine is the flat edge of a perfect bound or wiro bound booklet β€” it's the part you see when it's sitting on a shelf. The spine width is how thick that edge is, and it depends on your page count and paper weight.

More pages = thicker spine. Heavier paper = thicker spine. When you select your options in the product configurator, the spine width is calculated automatically β€” so you don't need to guess.

πŸ“ Spine width matters for your cover artwork. If you're designing a wraparound cover (front β†’ spine β†’ back as one piece), make sure your spine panel is the correct width β€” otherwise your text or logo on the spine will be off-centre or get trimmed.

Not sure? Leave the spine blank or just use a solid colour β€” it always looks clean, and nothing gets lost in the trim.

Saddle stitched booklets (stapled) don't have a flat spine, so spine width doesn't apply to those.

Saddle stitched (stapled) β€” two staples through the spine. Simple, fast, economical. Best for slimmer booklets of 8–40pp. Think newsletters, event programmes, product leaflets.

Perfect bound (PUR) β€” pages and cover glued together at the spine with a strong flexible adhesive, then trimmed square. Looks like a proper book or magazine. Minimum 32pp. Great for catalogues, annual reports, lookbooks, and manuals.

Wiro bound β€” metal wire coil through punched holes along the spine. Lays completely flat when open. Perfect for training manuals, recipe books, notebooks, or anything where the reader needs to write or work alongside it.

πŸ€” Not sure which to pick? Saddle stitch for slim and quick. Perfect bound for premium. Wiro for practical flat-lay use.

Pages for days

High-Definition Printing with stunningly vibrant colour reproduction – no matter the artwork, topic, or page count, we'll ensure it looks fantastic.

Keep in mind that booklets are printed on large sheets, folded, and then 'sections' are gathered, glued on the spine and the cover wrapped around, and trimmed. Each section (larger sheet) contains 8 pages of artwork once folded. So, when you supply artwork, ensure it's a multiple of 4 pages. If it’s not, consider adding an extra page or two to balance it out—note pages work well as a simple solution to fill this gap.

Binding options

  • Folded brochures like four pagers, six pagers, gate-folded brochures and concertina brochures. These are each formed from a single piece of paper or card that is simply creased and folded to make multiple pages and sides. These are fast and economical to produce and keep things very, very simple.
  • Traditional saddle-stitched brochures (stapled with two wires at the folded spine). Perfect for no-frills brochures, newsletters, product booklets and reports that have multiple pages (8 pages or more)
  • Wire-O bound brochures and booklets. These use a coloured metal coil or comb that binds the pages together through a series of neatly punched holes. The wire comes in a variety of different colours, for example, black, white, red, etc. Wire-O bound booklets are perfect for manuals, information booklets, presentations and even bespoke writing pads.
  • Perfect bound brochures and booklets. Perfect Binding is a popular softcover bookbinding method. In this process, the pages and cover are securely glued together at the spine using a strong yet flexible thermal adhesive. The remaining three sides of the book are then trimmed to create clean, "perfect" edges." This version keeps the original meaning but smoothens the language a bit for clarity and flow.

Finishing options

Printed brochures can also include a variety of different finishes …

Lamination

To the outer covers includes matt, ‘soft touch’ and gloss options. Laminated covers are protected from moisture and are more resistant to wear and tear than their non-laminated equivalents. Matt lamination flattens contrast and gives brochures and booklets a fresh, contemporary feel. Gloss lamination gives brochures a high gloss look at the same time as making colours saturated and images more contrasty, for extra punch. ‘Soft touch’ lamination is similar in looks to matt lamination but has a velvety, slightly rubbery feel to the touch.

Let the paper do all the work

It’s amazing how effective different papers and cards can be, all on their own. A brochure or booklet that uses uncoated paper or card has a natural, contemporary feel to it. In contrast, a brochure that uses coated stock tends to look more corporate and a little more traditional. It’s a tricky balance, though, because coated papers will ‘lift’ the ink to make the graphics and text more punchy while uncoated printing papers and cards tend to mute the colours in comparison. Each has their place, though, and any preference is a purely subjective thing.

Take it to the next level and mix it up

Taking all of this a step or two further, you could consider textured papers or cards, which will literally give your brochures and booklets a whole new ‘feel’. Textured covers can bring an extremely high quality aspect to any brochure or booklet — even more so when you also incorporate the aforementioned metallic foiling to the graphics on the cover. It’s a superb combination!

Lets play by the rules...

Try to use PDF

PDF logo for artwork

Save your files in PDF/X-1a:2001 format for optimal print accuracy.

However, if that's not possible, don’t worry—we’re flexible and will still accept PNG, JPEG, or any other format you have.

Our Artwork team is here to support you, so if there are any issues, they'll get in touch with a fix, a workaround, or maybe just to have a chat if they're feeling lonely!

Safe Area

image on 3mm margin for artwork guide by rapid print pro

Please ensure that any text is positioned at least 3mm away from the edges. While we strive for perfect cutting, there is always a small chance of movement. If you prefer a borderless background, extend it beyond the edge, but keep all important content 3mm away from the edges.

Resolution

Image showing high resolution artwork checking by Rapid print pro

Supplying high-resolution artwork guarantees sharp, clear prints with optimal detail and color accuracy. Images from WhatsApp, for example, won't produce crisp prints, so always export from Canva at 300dpi. Whenever possible, use original images instead of screenshots. Don't worry if you make a mistake—our artwork team will be your safety net and will catch anything that may need adjustment.

Text Size

Example of how large text should be on a business card

As a general rule, try to keep text above 6pt—of course, for designs like roller banners, you should use fonts 70pt and above. And, if you're working on a contract with the devil, maybe a font size below 6pt could be more fitting! In short, keep fonts above 6pt to ensure they are easily readable.

Make it Bleed

Bleed example for artwork

If you're lucky enough to have the Adobe package, set your bleed to 3mm in the document settings. This allows your artwork (such as backgrounds) to extend beyond the finished size into the bleed area. This way, any slight movement during cutting will be hidden, ensuring no white borders around the edges.

If you don’t have a design package, no worries! Simply make your artwork canvas 3mm larger on all sides. For example, if you're designing a business card that will be trimmed to 85mm x 55mm, your background should extend to 91mm x 61mm. Just remember, any text should be at least 3mm away from the 85mm x 55mm edge!

Transparency

image of a diagram explaining how transperency works

Printing digital artworks can come with one little issue—transparency. While it might not be visible on screen, it has a huge impact when it comes to printing. So, make sure to flatten any transparency before exporting.

Roller Banner

Example of how Roller Banner Artwork should be supplied

Roller banner artwork should be supplied at the product size, e.g., for a standard 80cm roller banner, artwork should be provided at 800mm x 2000mm with a 3mm bleed on all sides, if possible.

Our artwork team will then add an extra 150mm section below your design, which will be hidden inside the roller banner mechanism. This section helps attach the display to the pull-up banner.

Please, there’s no need to include this extra section in your artwork when submitting.
