Delivering without the coughs and splutters

The Promise of Low-Carbon Freight: How Cargo Bikes Are Revolutionizing Urban Deliveries

As cities continue to grow and urban congestion worsens, finding sustainable solutions for urban freight has become more urgent than ever. One such solution that is gaining momentum is the use of cargo bikes for deliveries. A recent study, *The Promise of Low-Carbon Freight*, sheds light on the significant benefits of cargo bikes over traditional delivery vans in terms of environmental impact, speed, and efficiency.

The research, conducted by Pedal Me, reveals some eye-opening statistics: cargo bikes not only travel faster through cities like London—averaging 15mph compared to just 6mph for vans—but they also complete more deliveries per hour, with a 7-to-4 advantage over traditional vehicles. This translates to a faster, more efficient service that can help ease the pressures of urban traffic. Beyond speed, the environmental impact of cargo bikes is particularly striking. Over the course of a 98-day study, Pedal Me’s cargo bikes saved nearly 4,000 kg of CO2 and over 5.5 kg of NOx emissions. The report suggests that if just 10% of van kilometers in London were replaced by cargo bikes, over 133,000 tonnes of CO2 could be saved each year. The numbers speak for themselves—cargo bikes are a cleaner, greener alternative to traditional delivery methods.

In addition to their environmental and efficiency benefits, cargo bikes also offer a way to reduce urban congestion. With an increasing demand for home deliveries, cities are facing more traffic, pollution, and a lack of available parking space for delivery vans. Cargo bikes, however, take up less space, reduce road congestion, and require no parking spaces, helping reclaim public space for pedestrians and cyclists. Across Europe, the rise of cargo bikes has already shown impressive results. The report highlights that the introduction of 100,000 cargo bikes between 2018 and 2020 has resulted in the equivalent of 24,000 fewer flights from London to New York in CO2 emissions.

The potential for cargo bikes to revolutionize urban transport is clear. Cities looking to reduce their carbon footprint and improve overall livability can benefit from adopting cargo bikes on a larger scale. In fact, many cities already have programs in place that support the transition to low-carbon freight solutions. The *Promise of Low-Carbon Freight* report recommends that governments and city planners continue to invest in infrastructure that supports cargo bike services. As the demand for sustainable transport solutions grows, cargo bikes are poised to play a crucial role in creating greener, more efficient cities.

Ultimately, cargo bikes are not just a practical alternative to delivery vans—they represent a vision for the future of urban transport that prioritizes sustainability, efficiency, and livability. For cities looking to reduce emissions and reclaim public space, embracing cargo bikes is a no-brainer. As more businesses and cities recognize the benefits, cargo bikes could very well become the norm in urban logistics.
